Levothyroxine with Sucralfate Interaction Details

Drug interactions of Carafate may include reactions with other drugs taken at the same time, preventing their full absorption. It is best to take other drugs 2 hours before or after sucralfate to avoid drug interactions. Tell your doctor if you are taking cimetidine, digoxin, levothyroxine, phenytoin, quinidine, ranitidine, tetracycline, theophylline, blood thinners, certain antibiotics, and all medications and supplements you use.

Use the dosing syringe provided, or use a medicine dose-measuring device (not a kitchen spoon). Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use. Equivalence of sucralfate oral suspension to sucralfate tablets has not been demonstrated. Lower than usual dosages are recommended for elderly patients and adolescents. This interaction could result in very serious and potentially life-threatening consequences. If you are taking this drug combination, it is very important to be under close medical supervision to minimize severe side effects and ensure your synthroid recalls safety.

What happens if I miss a dose?

• CARAFATE Oral Suspension contains sucralfate and sucralfate is an α-D-glucopyranoside, β-D­fructofuranosyl-, octakis-(hydrogen sulfate), aluminum complex.
• While healing with sucralfate may occur during the first week or two, treatment should be continued for 4 to 8 weeks unless healing has been demonstrated by x-ray or endoscopic examination.
• After another drug has been added to or removed from your regimen, you should report worsening of any disease symptoms or medication side effects to your doctor.

The patient is also taking Caltrate which contains calcium carbonate. Phosphate binders (e.g., calcium carbonate, ferrous sulfate, sevelamer) may bind to Synthroid and decrease the serum concentration. As a result, Synthroid and Caltrate should be administered at least 4 hours apart.

Sucralfate can make it harder for your body to absorb other medications you take by mouth. The physician should read the « PRECAUTIONS » section when considering the use of CARAFATE Oral Suspension in pregnant or pediatric patients, or patients of childbearing potential. Fatal complications, including pulmonary and cerebral emboli have occurred with inappropriate intravenous administration of CARAFATE Oral Suspension. These foods should be avoided within several hours of dosing if possible. Synthroid (levothyroxine) is the most prescribed drug for the treatment of hypothyroidism. While Synthroid is generally considered to be the drug of choice for patients with hypothyroidism, it has specific instructions for administration to ensure proper absorption. Synthroid should be administered on an empty stomach at the same time each day, at least 30 to 60 minutes prior to a meal. Absorption of the drug may be decreased if administered with foods such as soybean flour, cottonseed meal, walnuts, dietary fibers, and grapefruit juice.

While Lithobid (lithium) has the potential to interact with many drugs including SSRIs, NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors, just to name a few, it does not appear to interact with Synthroid. Taking levothyroxine and sucralfate too close together may interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine and reduce its effectiveness. To prevent or minimize potential interaction, these medications should preferably be taken at least four hours apart. In one study, givingthe sucralfate 8 hours after the levothyroxinecircumvented the interaction. When sucralfate is given with enteral (tube) feedings, the feeding tube may become clogged and/or sucralfate may not work as well. You could interrupt the feeding for 1 hour before and after the sucralfate dose. However, this still may not entirely avoid the interaction and may not always be feasible. Chronic oral toxicity studies of 24 months’ duration were conducted in mice and rats at doses up to 1 g/kg (12 times the human dose). CARAFATE (sucralfate) Oral Suspension is indicated in the short-term (up to 8 weeks) treatment of active duodenal ulcer.
